Care for the record

Editorial approach & contributions

Preserve cultural names. Show the evidence. Make corrections traceable.

How an entry reaches publication

  1. Record a source's author, institution, date, stable link and exact locator.
  2. Check its full text and distinguish observation, quotation, interpretation and uncertainty.
  3. Seek language and cultural review, including relevant perspectives for comparative passages.
  4. Confirm rights, consent and credits for photographs, recordings and interviews.
  5. Record the reviewer and approval date; obtain the site owner's deployment approval.

Sources are checked before inclusion. The site owner approved the initial release on 13 October 2026; specialist cultural and language review remains pending and corrections are welcome.

What the evidence can support

A dated photograph establishes an attested instance, not the first invention of a practice. A catalogue attribution is useful evidence with its own limits. A reported exchange in one locality must not become a claim about every member of a community. Colonial accounts require attention to the observer, speaker and setting.

Yorùbá terms remain visible alongside plain English descriptions and search aliases. Igbo terms and historical sequences require appropriate linguistic verification. English text uses Yorùbá diacritics where checked; a full Yorùbá translation is a future review task.

Contribute a record or correction

Use the existing contact page and identify the heritage entry. Include the proposed correction, source title, page or catalogue number, date, place and supporting link. For original media or testimony, state ownership, attribution preference and the permission you can grant. Do not send private third-party details without consent.

Contributions require review before inclusion. Editors retain a dated correction log and explain material changes.
